"My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?"



It was there upon the Cross, where our dear Savior suffered loss,
Hanging there among the thieves, in the midst of the old wooden Cross,
They gave Him vinegar to drink, with gall, upon His head plaited thorns to wear,
He gave His everything for you and me while hanging there.

Above all, loved us unto His death, no sin did He ever commit,
But upon His dear body, they dressed Him in robe of scarlet,
Put a reed in His right hand and mocked Him saying, Hail King of the Jews,
Not realizing that later this would be for all to see, for Him be used.

For He is the King not only of the Jews, but of all things on earth,
In Heaven and below, because He's Gods' chosen Son born of a virgin birth,
But they crucified Him, parted His garments, upon His vesture lots were cast,
Knowing not, nor caring not, of whom they were reviling on to the last.

They mocked Him in asking Him to have God save Him now, not knowing,
This was the Christ, given on our behalf of blessings to overflowing,
From the sixth hour until the ninth, darkness was over all the land,
Just before the death of our Savior Jesus, which was by their hand.

My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me? About the ninth hour,
Knowing for Himself that soon, this old Cross would be His bier,
Until down into the darkness of the earth, He won the true victory,
This God, my God, Thou didst unto all who live and believe even unto me.
